It was only a matter of time until the sports game companies like EA Sports began using laser scanning in a big way to make their games more realistic. Given what has been going on with the car racing games I am surprised it has taken this long.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that EA Sports is using laser scanning to record detailed 3D imagery of stadiums, courts, putting greens and even cheerleaders. Despite the availability of 3D data EA Sports does not have any plans to create full 3D games, however.
“It’s clear that many games take their cues from movies, and there’s been a big wave of 3D movies, but they didn’t set the world on fire,” Hall said. “A common rule of thumb in gaming is never to base a product on peripheral technology because you alienate those who can’t afford it.” Hall is the production director at UCF’s Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy.
