- The ASTM E57.04 Data Interoperability Subcommittee has been working for over 3 years on a neutral data exchange format.
- The first balloting of the standard has been successfully completed.
- We are also close to opening up the beta test program for the reader/writer software implementations.
As some of you know the ASTM E57.04 Data Interoperability Subcommittee has been working for over 3 years on a terrestrial laser scanning data exchange format. I am very pleased to report that the first release of the specification is within sight as we have successfully completed the first balloting phase. We believe that the ASTM will be able to publish the specification within the next couple of months.
At the same time, we have been working on a separate, but directly related effort to provide both “reader” and “writer” reference software implementations. We are very close to opening up our beta test program for this part of the effort. I have a number of vendors who have expressed their interest in participating. If you have an interest please send me an email to confirm.
Adoption of this standard will take some time, but the more that you encourage your hardware and software vendors to support it, the better it will be for all involved.
