3DMakerPro Moose Structure Light Scanner Review

Structured light scanning is quickly becoming more accessible, and the 3DMakerPro Moose is an example of how far consumer 3D scanners have come. With a claimed accuracy of 0.03 mm (30 microns) and resolution of 0.07 mm, the Moose promises professional-grade results at a fraction of the cost of traditional systems.

To evaluate performance, I scanned two very different objects: a Raspberry Pi and a deer antler. The Raspberry Pi provided a technical challenge with reflective ports, high contrast, shallow engravings, and recessed cavities. The antler introduced a different set of challenges—large, irregular, and matte in texture—requiring a handheld scanning approach to keep within the Moose’s working range of about 250–350 mm.

The standout feature of this scanner is its accuracy. I compared a measurement taken on the mesh in JM Studio with one taken using calipers on the actual Raspberry Pi. The difference was just 0.04 mm. While not a perfect test—since measurements may not have been perfectly orthogonal, as noted in the video—this result suggests that sub-tenth-millimeter accuracy is attainable with the Moose.

Another impressive result was the Moose’s ability to capture very fine surface detail. On the antler, the scanner reproduced subtle textures and even small cracks that are hard to see with the naked eye. It also managed to record the Raspberry Pi’s shallow engravings, which are less than a millimeter deep. That said, the slight reflectivity of the Pi’s case appeared to soften some of the captured surface detail compared to the sharper results achieved on the matte antler.

The included software, JM Studio, proved capable but requires practice. It rewards steady scanning and overlapping passes, while occasional quirks—such as automatically closing through-holes—remind users that processing choices can matter as much as data capture.

Overall, the Moose delivers strong results for its category. It is not without limitations—reflective surfaces, deep recesses, and high contrast remain challenges—but for consumer-grade scanning, its accuracy and level of detail are impressive. For consumer grade applications, the Moose offers exceptional accuracy and detail at an affordable price.
