In the robotics world SLAM – Simultaneous Localization and Mapping has been studied for 15+ years. Some of this work has included the use of laser scanners, but these researchers at CSIRO’s – the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation’s ICT -Information and Communication Technologies Centre based in Australia are using SLAM concepts to radically change the laser scanning data collection process.
Take a look at the Prezi at the bottom of this page link to get a better understanding of their new approach. This is the kind of original thinking and innovation that just might lead to the next generation laser scanner.
