Year in Infrastructure Awards 2022

I am in London where we just finished Day 1 of the Going Digital Bentley Systems Year in Infrastructure Awards – my favorite event of the year as I get to review some of the most impressive infrastructure projects from around the globe. This year I was one of three jurors for the Survey and Control category.

In general this year’s event is a scaled down version of the YII’s of the past. As an example, there used to be 22 categories. This year there are only 12. Instead of 4 days, it is now 2. I think this has something to do with Covid.

Today was filled with live presentations by the three finalists in each category. For Survey and Control we had a presentation by a group in Brazil who have built a centralized database of over 1,000 water and waste water plants around Rio de Janeiro. Much of the data was captured with drones and Context Capture was used to process the data for this group as well as the other two finalists.

Murray Dam in San Diego, CA was the second presenter. They made use of lidar drones to increase the productivity and safety of their rope access inspection teams.

Singapore Land Authority explained how they are building a detailed, 3D model of the entire island of Singapore. They used a combination of drones and mobile lidar to map the entire island.

Greg Bentley then gave an introduction of his new senior management team, including a new Chief Marketing officer, Customer Success, Operating and Product officers – definitely a major changing of the guard.

Tomorrow will feature a series of in-depth technical presentations by Greg and his team, followed by the black tie awards ceremony and party. Should be fun. Check back to find out who the winner of the Survey and Control category.
