Virtual Augusta Produced with Laser Scanning

With the Masters just a couple of weeks away it seems like the right time for this post. According to the GolfChannel.com’s Jay Coffin, EA Sports is rolling out the new “Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters”.

Jay, who got to play the hallowed Augusta, Georgia course says it is as close as you can get without being there. The game, available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii consoles, is set to release March 29. I wonder how this will interface with the Kinect controller.

This is the first time that EA Sports has used laser scanning to create one of their games. According to the article the course is accurate to within 6 mm and the greens to within 1 mm – seems like that might be stretching it a bit, but that’s what is being claimed.

Even if you are not a golfer, have a look at the site to get a sense of the quality of the imagery. They have over 200,000 hours invested in creating this game – now that is a lot of modeling.
