Using Laser Scanning to Retrofit MEP Seismic Restraints

This is an interesting article in Structure Magazine describing the value of 3D laser scanning in the design of retrofits to MEP – mechanical, electrical, plumbing seismic restraints. During an earthquake these critical structural elements must be designed to withstand the dynamic loads.

Here is just one possible justification for the use of laser scanning, “Today, insurance companies who provide work interruption insurance to major factories are hiring engineering firms to assess the MEP systems’ seismic adequacy. They would rather pay to increase the systems’ robustness now, than pay the factory owners millions of dollars because their factory is offline”.

Sounds like opportunity to me.
