- The USGS NGP has just released an updated version of their Base LiDAR Specification.
- The intent is to insure that the data being collected is suitable for inclusion in the National Elevation Dataset and CLICK.
- This document is an important reference for all aerial LiDAR projects.
The U.S. Geological Survey National Geospatial Program (NGP) has recently released an updated version of their Base LiDAR Specification. Labeled as Version 12 this document is being offered as a minimum set of requirements. With the increase in stimulus funding it is even more important that there be a minimum set of requirements that the projects adhere to in order to insure that the resulting DEMs be suitable for use as part of the National Elevation Dataset (NED) and in CLICK.
Perhaps more importantly from a scientific point of view the spec also addresses protection of the source point cloud data integrity. All too often the source data is lost in the processing of the DEMs. This will insure its use in non-DEM science and mapping applications. The hope is that this document will be adopted by the USGS and other federal agencies, but I believe this document will serve as an important reference for all LiDAR data collection projects worldwide.
Kudos to those involved and for the straightforward and compact presentation.
