The two technologies receiving the most attention from Greg Bentley, CEO of the company bearing his name at the Year in Infrastructure Conference 2013 are point clouds and cloud services. In the case of the latter Bentley is going to make a big push into what they are calling “managed services”. In effect they will enter into service level agreements (SLA’s) to manage your entire IT infrastructure. They are using Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform, not Amazon to support this.
Unlike Autodesk who cannot provide sneak previews since they are a public company Bentley is not held to that same restriction. I was told that the next major enhancement to the point cloud functionality in Descartes will be support for automatically extracting pipe runs. This should be available by first quarter 2014 and will provide an important link with Bentley’s successful plant software offerings.
I am off to meet the three finalists in the point cloud processing category.
