I was speaking with a transportation industry veteran about the Mobile LiDAR standards project that we are starting to work on. He works for a prominent consulting firm that has a mobile LiDAR data collection system. I thought a few of his comments were very interesting.
First he noted that they are no longer doing demos. At one point in time their SUV was set up with a specific seat for a visitor. That has been removed and their rig is so busy now that they can’t afford to do demos.
Furthermore this industry veteran pointed out that mobile LiDAR is just the next step in the evolution of data collection for transportation. He pointed out that he was involved with the introduction of aerial photography, then orthophotos and now mobile LiDAR – it’s just part of the same education process that has gone on for many years.
It helps to have perspective.
