6Park.news/Maryland published an article about methane gas levels in Earth’s atmosphere rising at an increasingly fast rate and studies from NOAA have shown a new record in heat-trapping greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. Benjamin Poulter, a NASA atmospheric scientist, has stated that “the growth that we have seen in 2020 and 2021 is totally surprising and unexpected.” Poulter has just finished an expedition to the Florida Everglades with the focus on studying the impacts of wetlands on the methane problem.
In order to better study the methane in the Everglades area, Poulter and his team used many different tools, one of which was the RIEGL VZ-400i. This cutting-edge 3D Laser Scanning System combines a future-oriented, innovative new processing architecture and internet connectivity with RIEGL’s latest waveform processing LiDAR technology. This real-time data flow is enabled through dual processing platforms; a dedicated processing system for data acquisition, waveform processing and system operations, and a second processing platform which enables real-time data registration, geo-referencing, filtering and analysis to be executed simultaneously. With this technology, Poulter’s team learned more about the plants and animals of the Everglades and how they have direct impacts on the production of methane in these regions.
