At a presentation that I attended yesterday the concept of managing 3D highway design models was recommended. I think this makes perfect sense. In fact it seems to me that transportation agencies should have a 3D data management strategy that includes LiDAR/laser scanned data, 3D geometric design models, and AMG -automated machine guidance data.
This data management strategy should be based on a unified data model, similar to the data models that form the foundation of all GIS applications. The transportation agency data model should actually be one of the components of a comprehensive, integrated AEC data model that should include BIM, above and below ground utilities, environmental data and more.
