natgeoThis National Geographic graphic animation page provides a very easy to understand explanation of how airborne lidar is dramatically changing the field of archaeology and as we know many others for that matter.

In this case by measuring the distance light travels to the ground and back, researchers can digitally strip away the canopy from forested areas like Mosquitia, in Honduras—revealing ancient settlements.

The contribution of lidar to this field of science is truly amazing.
