Laser Scanning and The Blind Driver Challenge

Bobby Hambrick from Autonomous Stuff (great name) provided the tip on this story. They have been selected to provide the laser scanner for what is called the Blind Driver Challenge. This event was proposed to Virginia Tech by the National Federation of the Blind – the NFB.

A team of students from the Mechanical Engineering Dept. are working on the project in conjunction with Dr. Dennis Hong’s world-renowned Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory (RoMeLa). The ultimate goal is to provide a blind person with a degree of independence that they have never experienced. Kudos to all involved.

Here is a video on the laser scanner in action – impressive.
