Iconic Shipwreck Preserved with Lidar

The recent discovery of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship, the HMS *Endurance*, has offered maritime historians a remarkable opportunity to study an iconic shipwreck. Using cutting-edge laser scanning technology, researchers have created stunningly detailed 3D images of the wreck, lying nearly three kilometers below the surface of the Weddell Sea. Trapped and crushed by ice in 1915, *Endurance* was lost for over a century before being rediscovered in 2022.

Laser scanning played a crucial role in documenting the ship’s remarkable preservation, aided by the cold Antarctic waters that have kept it largely intact. The scanning system, combining lidar and photogrammetry, enabled researchers to map the entire wreck in high resolution without disturbing its fragile condition. By sending laser pulses toward the wreck and measuring the light’s return, the system created detailed 3D models that reveal the ship’s intact rigging, helm, and even personal artifacts left by the crew.

The non-invasive nature of laser scanning was critical for this mission, as traditional methods like sonar or physical dives could risk damaging the site. Lidar’s ability to collect precise data from a distance meant researchers could capture every detail of the *Endurance* without direct contact, preserving its condition for future study.

Beyond its immediate scientific value, the laser scans of *Endurance* also serve as a digital archive. These 3D models allow experts to virtually revisit the site without launching another costly expedition and provide a valuable resource for future generations.

As this technology continues to evolve, the use of laser scanning in maritime archaeology is opening new doors, offering us a glimpse into the past with unprecedented clarity. The discovery of the *Endurance* is just the beginning of what this technology can reveal.
