Geotechnical Applications of LiDAR

This masters thesis, by Stephanie Fekete at Queensland University demonstrated the value of laser scanning as a new tool for geotechnical assessment of drill and blast rock tunneling projects. Using a phase-based scanner for as little as 5 minutes at the tunnel face provided sufficient data to perform rock mass characterization and assess the stability.

The contractor and engineers on the project found significant value in the data and there was no impact on production.The point clouds were used to create highly representative discreet 3D models that were used for back-analysis and for predictive assessments.

A proposed workflow incorporating LiDAR data was proposed.
