George Mason University’s Forensic Science Program has further strengthened its position as one of the nation’s leading programs in its field through a partnership with FARO Technologies, Inc., which will result in the world’s first FARO certified forensic laboratory.

From an article in Fior Reports by Becca Roberts.

As the industry leader in the type of high-tech 3D measurement and imaging that leading law enforcement and others use to investigate crime scenes, FARO Mason will loan $ 300,000 in equipment to students training in cutting-edge forensic science technology. Students also have the opportunity to work with law enforcement partners such as the George Mason University Police, Fairfax County Police, Fairfax City Police, and others including the U.S. Army.

Much of the research is being conducted at Mason’s new five-acre Forensic Science Research and Training Laboratory in Manassas, one of only eight in the world capable of forensic science research using human remains in the open air.

Mason is the first university to do this and offer FARO equipment certification. “Whether a student at the university’s ‘body farm’ learns to deal with an outside scene, misses a crime scene in the forensic crime scene or testifies in court as an expert witness, he will slip into the role of real forensic scientists and learn how to apply their science and skills for answers on how crimes are committed and how they are done with the accuracy and precision of the technology of the 21st program within Mason’s College of Science.

“This exciting partnership between FARO and Mason Forensic Science is the first of its kind worldwide, and the opportunities we can now offer our students and develop with our external partners are only conceivable.”

As a direct result of the partnership, Mason’s Forensic Science Program will soon be the first in the country to offer a 3D course in crime scene documentation. Fernando Miralles-Wilhelm, Dean of Mason’s College of Science, praised the partnership for leading forensic research, education and training at the highest level. “This unique fusion of FARO’s forensic technology and the expertise of Mason’s Forensic Science program positions it as one of the most complete and diverse programs of its kind in the country, providing unique, hands-on training and certification for students and law enforcement agencies in 3D crime scene editing , forensic anthropology and even forensic art, “said Miralles-Wilhelm. Forensics has changed a lot over the years, with technologies like 3D scanning and reality capture now playing a vital role in preserving crime scenes so investigators can continue to return to the virtual crime scene to evaluate evidence.
