Crowd Sourcing 3D Models with the Kinect

A group of robotics researchers in Sweden have launched Kinect@Home – a website where you can download a plug-in that allows you to capture 3-D images with your Kinect in return for sharing the images with the researchers. Their goal, as reported in this Wired article is to develop a vast library of 3D images that can be used to improve many aspects of life, including help for the elderly.

It’s a grand experiment. It will be interesting to see if they can reach critical mass.
