Creating Topo Maps Using LiDAR

p-craterlake-recmap-sideAAs I sit here in New Hampshire celebrating the Columbus Day holiday I know many people are in the White Mountains hiking and enjoying the foliage. I wish I was there, but come to think of it I wonder what the situation is with the government shut down and using the trails. The clock is ticking.

For those who might be new to airborne LiDAR one of the reasons that it is so popular comes from the fact that it can be used to produce highly accurate digital terrain models. From these the standard topographic maps used by hikers and others who love to get into the outdoors can be produced.

The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) released a new recreation map of Crater Lake this week, the third in its series of geologic guides and recreation maps of iconic Oregon places. I was lucky to see Crater Lake – amazing place.

I hope everyone gets some time to enjoy the holiday here in the U.S.
