The CDC is evaluating the feasibility of using LiDAR as a dust monitoring tool in the mining industry. The research project was begun a year ago by Gerald J. Joy to see if the technology could be used to reliably measure coal mine dust without negatively affecting production levels.
Goal Number 1 of the project is to “Reduce respiratory diseases in miners by reducing health hazards in the workplace associated with coal workers’ pneumoconiosis, silicosis, and diesel emissions.”
