As the plans progress for the introduction of autonomous vehicles the questions begin to arise, such as how are these vehicles going to operate in rain and snow. This article in Auto World News explains how Ford has been working on solving the problem of bad weather.
Ford is creating a 3D database of the highway environment that they can use to compare the real time position with the database and determine where they are even in inclement weather. The data from the lidar sensors are also being post processed to ignore rain and snow.
There is likely more research money being spent on the use of lidar by the automotive industry than any other. Reminds me of the GPS vehicle business in the early 1990’s.
