Andalusia Commits to Bathymetric Lidar

Andalusia’s coastline is under increasing pressure from rising sea levels, intensifying storms, and the urgent need to protect marine biodiversity. To address these challenges, the region is turning to cutting-edge technology.

A recent article in Hydro International highlights Andalusia’s latest step forward: a new tender for bathymetric lidar—an advanced mapping solution designed to support sustainable coastal planning and environmental conservation.

According to the report,

“the contract represents a significant investment in advanced geospatial technology to support sustainable coastal planning and environmental protection.”

How does it work?
Bathymetric lidar uses green laser pulses that penetrate the water surface, allowing aircraft to capture high-resolution data even in remote or hard-to-reach coastal areas. This method is especially effective for generating detailed 3D models of nearshore seabeds, where traditional sonar may fall short due to depth limitations or vessel constraints.
