- The convergence of BIM, CAD and 3D visualization is the most important driver for the future of our industry.
- The OGC is sponsoring a 3D Fusion Summit.
- The key players have an opportunity to get involved with the OGC’s 3DIM Working Group.
The convergence of CAD – GIS, 3 – D visualization, and BIM is one of the most, if not the most important topic for the future growth of our industry. 3D laser scanning is the critical, powerful link between the digital and the real world. We are the data providers, and as an industry we should be sure we are one of the key players in this discussion. I am not sure we are that this point.
Many of us have been struggling with just coming up with a name to accurately describe this convergence. Perhaps the OGC – The Open Geospatial Consortium has found it with their upcoming 3D Fusion Summit. The Summit is going to be held on June 23, 2009 at the Stata Center at MIT in Cambridge, MA. I will attend, and provide a detailed summary of the discussions for those who cannot attend, but I hope that many of you will.
I was not aware of this, but the OGC has established a 3-D Information Management Domain Working Group. Tim Case, who is a 3D laser scanning believer is the Chair of 3DIM WG. I have an email into Tim to find out more about the Group. The OGC has been instrumental in establishing worldwide GIS standards. This can only be a good thing for 3D laser scanning, and I strongly encourage the key players to get involved.
