Utah DOT’s Asset Management System

I sat in on a webinar today sponsored by the GTMA – Geospatial Transportation Mapping Association which provided an overview of a very impressive project that is being funded by the Utah Department of Transportation. Essentially all of the state highways in Utah, nearly 6,000 centerline miles are being mobile mapped by Mandli Communications.

Three groups within the DOT – Planning and Programming, Central Maintenance and Central Traffic and Safety combined forces to fund the project. A number of sensors were used including a mobile laser scanning system that was reported to have achieved approximately 1 meter absolute accuracy.

As Stan Burns, Asset Management Director pointed out the DOT’s motto is “Good Roads Cost Less.” The data collected will be used to support pavement management, maintenance, sign inventory and safety analysis, plus a whole lot more according to Stan. The data is being managed with ArcGIS online in support of what is being called uPlan.

The FHWA – Federal Highway Administration is also helping to showcase this project through their Every Counts Initiative. Look for a more in-depth article to follow and kudos to all involved for making this happen.
