The Transportation Research Board has published the final report for the recently completed synthesis project where a team that I was part of documented the state of the art in geospatial data, tools, technologies and information based on a series of online questionnaires, interviews and a detailed literature search.
Prepared for transportation applications, I think you will find this a very valuable reference document, in general.
