Now this is interesting. Dr. Fraser Dalgleish at the Harbor Branch of Florida Atlantic University has received funding from the Office of Naval Research to study the use of pulsed laser line scan(PLLS) technology. The purpose of this is to develop a real time underwater monitoring system that could be used by the military to search for mines, as well to protect coastal waters and harbors. The technology can also be used to make site assessments, surveys and rapid underwater inspections. The goal is to significantly improve the quality of underwater imaging while reducing the form factors and payloads.

On a side note for the LinkedIn networkers I just became aware of the Laser Scanning group. There are over 600 members worldwide. It seems like it could be worthwhile to be a part of.

Naturally, my first thought as a laser scanning archaeologist is: Scanning all those underwater ship wrecks–especially the ancient ones!
