One to the key themes of the TRB AFB 80 meeting the past three days has been the need for greater understanding of the role of accurate survey information in transportation. On the highway construction front the hot technology is AMG – automated machine guidance.
One of the major issues in the adoption of this technology is the transfer of 3D models. Designers are not creating 3D models suitable for AMG. Many don’t have the knowledge to do that.
Part of that discussion involves the requirement for accurate survey control. Many contractors are not aware of the issues involving GNSS, grids and datums. The committee is going to host a 90 minute webinar in early 2014 in conjunction with the FHWA. Please let me know if you have any lessons learned that you would like to share.
