Latitude matters!! I left Orlando with a bright blue sky and temp in the 80′s. I got to Boston, which was lucky to begin with and then drove home in 6″ of snow with very nasty roads – good old Mother Nature.
I think the final morning sessions at Riegl 2012 included some of the most interesting presentations of the entire conference. Don’t think for one minute that the US has the corner on 3D technology. Here are a few highlights:
- Dr. Christian Briese is researching the possible benefits of using LIDARs of multiple wavelengths to improve classification
- Technet-Rail manages all of the physical assets for German railways. They have a state-of-the-art 3D LIDAR-derived asset management system – extremely impressive.
- A similarly impressive presentation about the use of mobile LIDAR in Russia to manage rail systems where the customers are demanding 3D models
- Keith Blonquist from Utah State explained how he is working on optimal calibration of airborne LIDAR data
- Luc Lenain from Scripps is using LIDAR to study wave fields around the world – a huge untapped market for the use of the technology. They can actually record the wave height and shape using LIDAR.
Congratulations to Jim Van Rens, Susan Licari and the entire Riegl team for a very well run and interesting event.
