NASA Using LiDAR to Track Hurricane Earl

Researchers from NASA Langley are using a LiDAR-equipped airplane to better understand the formation of hurricanes. They recently flew their research aircraft into the eye of Earl when it was packing 130 mph winds. The LiDAR is capable of measuring wind speed all 3 directions.

One of the potential outcomes of the research is better prediction of storm’s paths.
