More On One Photon Per Pixel

In a follow up to an earlier blog post on the work being done at MIT this article provides more detail on the theory behind the use of a single photon to determine the range to an object. If this can be commercialized it would enable laser rangefinders to infer depth from a hundredth as much light — and to produce images from only one nine-hundredth the light.

The key innovation appears to be on the signal processing front where they are able to filter out the noise using statistics and knowledge of “Poisson noise.”  It’s a fascinating story.
