Now for Moore’s Law Gone Wild. We are collecting more and more data, faster and faster in large part because we can. This is the big challenge for the scanner manufacturers, at least I think it should be. In certain apps this can be of value – such as DTMs or facades, but in most cases it is drastic overkill that bogs down all of the downstream steps in the workflow with the overhead of massive data sets.
Think about it. There was a reason that the party chief was relied on to collect just what was needed. Now the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction.
We need smarter data collection, but I don’t think anyone is even thinking about this. We need to not collect, or perhaps collect, but not store any more data than we need. The auto industry immediately discards point clouds in favor of much more efficient surfaces. The challenge to scanner designers should be to work smarter, not faster.
