LiDAR vs. Camera for Lane Detection

With over 20,000 highway deaths occurring in the US from vehicles drifting out of their lane a system that would alert the driver to take corrective action would be extremely valuable. In research conducted at NCAT (National Center for Asphalt Technology) in Opelika, Alabama, they found that cameras performed slightly better than the LiDAR system they tested. The camera-based system also outperformed LiDAR in rain.

Look for this to become like the airbag – standard equipment.
