In this well documented article in Our Amazing Planet the use of airborne LiDAR reveals the incredible level of destruction to the New Jersey coastline. In places the beach lost more than 10 feet of dune.

I know people living on the coast who realized severe erosion effects as far up the coast as Rhode Island. Storm surges are powerful things.
