High Power Plugin for 3DS Max

  1. Alice Labs has ported their Studio Clouds point cloud plug from Maya to 3D Studio Max.
  2. It can reportedly handle billions of points smoothly and efficiently.
  3. This allows for streamlined rendering and modeling with the point cloud in the background.

Alice Labs, a Dutch company has recently released a powerful point cloud plug in for 3D Studio Max. It is also reported to be available in a stand alone version, although this may still be in beta testing. Studio Clouds was originally a plug in for Maya, but it has recently been modified. The reports are that it is capable of handling billions of points smoothly and efficiently. There is a a 64 bit version.

The key workflow that I find interesting is that Studio Clouds provides the ability to render and model directly in Max on top of the point cloud. This is certainly a streamlining of the processing and although I am not all that experienced in the use of 3ds or Maya these are powerful visualization and modeling engines that in many applications are all that is needed to create the final deliverable.

There are some rumors that since this is part of the Autodesk family that this technology may find its way into other products, such as Revit, and/or Navisworks. That would certainly change some things.
