Fuel3D – Handheld 3D Scanner for Under $1,000

Thanks to Bill Gutelius at Active Imaging Systems for yet another very interesting heads up. This is a Kickstarter project from Fuel3D, Inc. to develop a handheld 3D scanner (it does not actually scan) with a retail price of under $1,000.

Ambitious, yes, but they have a working system that is being used commercially in the medical field and they have done a lot of impressive work to get to this stage.

This reminds me of when Magellan released the first handheld GPS receiver for under $100. The world was never the same after that. I hope they can make it happen.
