Film School Boot Camp Uses LiDAR

  1. Lee Stranahan is offering a 3 day Visual Effects Supervisor’s Boot Camp in Santa Fe, NM.
  2. The Lidar Guys are going to provide the 3D laser scanning technology.
  3. As the consumer market becomes more interested in using LiDAR, the price of scanners is going to decline.

Now this is cool. A Visual Effects Supervisor’s Boot Camp is going to be held December 4 – 6 in one of my favorite places – Santa Fe, NM. The Program Director, Lee Stranahan notes in his blog that the session will include the use of 3D laser scanning. Looks like he is going to team with the LiDAR Guys, who are based a couple of hours to the south in Albuquerque, NM.

Lee notes that laser scanning is becoming a more commonly used technology for creating special effects in major Hollywood movies. This may not seem like an important development, and it may not be at this time, but when a major consumer market – the entertainment industry begins to find uses for a scientific technology this can have a major impact on supply and demand, and more importantly prices. Think Google and car navigation, for example.

The program for the camp sounds really interesting and at $2100 if you register early that does not seem like a bad investment. There is also an offer to get your tuition reimbursed if you can refer $20,000 in work to the LiDAR Guys over the next 12 months. Excellent example of being creative and making things happen.
