- There are 2 sessions at ILMF10 that caught my attention.
- The first is on the changing need for breaklines when using LiDAR.
- The second concerns using Adobe Reader to view 3D models.
In reviewing the ILMF10 conference program 2 presentations caught my attention. Both I am disappointed to say are on Friday after I will have returned to the East coast. I wanted to briefly highlight them, as I think they raise important issues.
The first concerns breaklines, with a particular emphasis on photogrammetric mapping. Tim Blak from Dewberry, a highly respected survey mapping firm will discuss the fact that with LiDARgrammetry breaklines can not only be compiled in 2.5 D, but they can also be compiled in 3D based on intensity. This leads to the question of whether the need is the same for image based methods. He is also going to discuss the use of hydro enforced breaklines.
The other paper is by Michael Bufkin from TerraGo Technologies. He notes that there is a lack of readily available and simple 3D viewing software. When he says this he is thinking about Adobe’s new ability to view 3D models and the fact that 3D PDF files are relatively speaking quite small. A quick aside – I am attending a session today on compressing LiDAR waveform data.
He notes that in order to use the Adobe viewer it will require significant extensions to the basic functionality. He is hoping to leverage the work already done on 2D GeoPDF, and will also discuss how to control 3D views via a 2D map view. Sounds very interesting and I hope to meet Michael to discuss this further.
