Digital Documentation 2011 Speakers Roundtable

The 2011 Digital Documentation conference kicked off today with a speaker’s roundtable. This was a great session with a lot of exchange of ideas in response to Doug Pritchard’s questions probing us on where we thought the technology would be 5 to 10 years in the future.

One theme was the need for better integration between software and hardware vendors – more of a systems approach. The hope is that the laser scanner manufacturers will work more closely with the smaller innovative software firms to jointly develop solutions that streamline the workflows.

I want to believe this is possible, but I have some real concerns about the business model that will support this. First of all the scanner developers are also in the software business, in some cases and secondly they consider their technology as closely guarded intellectual property.

Doug is also hosting a second group this week that is working on developing a set of best practices for digital historic preservation. There was interest in the use of ASTM E57 for data archiving purposes.

Two of the more interesting speakers in attendance were Greg Downing from xRez Studio, who works from Los Angeles with the film industry and Seb Jouan who has been working with Doug Pritchard on the use of laser scanning in modeling the acoustics of buildings ,like the top music halls in the world.

These small focused conferences are where the action is.
