CMSC 2009 is being held in just 2 weeks, July 20 – 24 in Louisville, KY. CMSC is celebrating its 25th anniversary with this event, which is billed as the “most focused annual event for close tolerance metrology industry professionals”. The Coordinate Metrology Society – CMS, is interested in “any measurement system, or software that produces or uses 3 dimensional coordinate data”.
I just came across a press release on a what seemed to be a very powerful handheld laser scanner with 6 degrees of freedom. The T-Scan TS50-A from Leica was designed for large volume portable applications, such as aircraft and turbines. This is not a table top handheld scanner. It is capable of scanning distances, or “volumes” up to 30 m.
The really interesting aspect of the technology is the combination of the handheld scanner with Leica’s laser tracker. The scanner has a reflector that can be automatically located in 3D by the accompanying laser tracker. Click here to see the video – very powerful technology.
I can see where this could have many applications outside of industrial metrology, if not in its present configuration then with some modifications. It’s all about choosing the right tool for the job, and being creative.
