Coastal Zone Changes and LiDAR

In this New York Times article Henry Fountain details the incredible changes that Sandy caused to the topography of Fire Island. As a barrier island its purpose is to protect the mainland. It did the job, but it will never be the same. The good news is that there are already signs of natural repair taking place.

Bill Gutelius noted that, “This article only refers to LIDAR in a tangential fashion in the text, but the media links have extensive depiction of the amazing graphics rendered from LIDAR data.  I would dare say that LIDAR is providing truly astounding information about the coastal dynamics and will be a key tool in discerning the major factors affecting coastal changes in the face of climate change.”

Thanks for the heads up Bill.
