- The Google investment is 3D city models is impressive.
- They have created a Cities in 3D program where they will publish a local government’s database.
- My question is whether Google will share their data.
I have to admit the investment that Google is making in producing 3D city models like those seen in the video below is truly impressive. There is little doubt that this is going to be the foundational database for a lot of future Google e-business. My question is will it be possible for other groups to make use of the Google generated data, beyond the neo-GIS applications that Google Earth currently supports.
A search on 3D cities revealed a program being offered by Google called “Cities in 3D”. On the surface this program would certainly provide Google with the opportunity to share their database, as this is what they are encouraging local governments to do, but I don’t see any mention of this. There is a reference to being able to make data submitted “view only”, but I don’t see any mention of being able to enhance, edit or download Google 3D city models.
I don’t claim to know much about this. Does anyone else have better information?

You can create 3D city models with the 3d Building maker. I don’t think there is a way to enhance this models. I wish there would be a better way to push this models in the Google Earth Public 3D Layer than with the 3D warehouse. I think business need enhancement of thier models, thats the point why we (snoovel.com) use own 3d city models, like the munich one to enable people to bring high quality models in.
