The Army’s Buckeye sensor system has been a tremendous success story for all parties, including Flight Landata – the developers. Having consulted with them for a few years I have a deep appreciation for the hard work that went into the Buckeye including 30 days in Iraq accompanied by the CEO to insure that the system would get a fair test. That was putting it all on the line.
At that time the Buckeye did not have a LiDAR sensor, but it has since been upgraded. The reason the Buckeye is so popular is its small size and the fact that it is unclassified imagery, which makes the turnaround much faster. They are in the process of testing an Umanned Aerial System (UAS) with the sensor package.
There is no question this system has saved a lot of lives.
