Apple Working on 3D Imaging Camera

In a patent application that recently became public Apple is proposing to develop a 3D imaging camera that could include the use of LIDAR. The design, which includes 2 imaging devices can be applied to both still photography and video to create stereo disparity maps for creating 3D imagery.

The announcement states that, “While others may have beaten Apple to market first, the technology described in today’s invention will definitely provide iOS devices with the ability to view killer 3D images that could only be appreciated on Apple’s “Resolutionary” Retina Display.”

This would certainly be a game changing combination and once again as with digital cameras the professional world gets to benefit from the investment being applied to build consumer products. Hang on.
